Emergency Sand Scraping
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management has issued Edisto Beach an emergency order to conduct sand scraping from the 100 block to the 400 block, along with a small portion of the 2800 block. Sand scraping work began earlier this week. Emergency permits are issued when the high tide line comes within twenty feet of a habitable structure due to erosion. While sand scraping is not intended as a long-term beach preservation solution, it aids in protecting properties from storm impacts and helps restore the dune following significant storm events.
